Mt Etna. is a unusual volcano in that most of the world's volcanoes occur on the constructive and destructive plate boundaries .

Etna is formed on a unique boundary between two continental plates, the
European and the African plate , which are pushing towards eachother due
to convection currents in the mantle beneath the Earth's crust and will
eventually elimate the Mediterranean.
When?
The
main eruption started on 12th July
2001.
HOWEVER scientists believe that the African plate is actually being
subducted (forced underneath) the Eurasian plate, so in fact, the plates are behaving as if it is a destructive boundary. And we all know what happens at destructive boundaries…
